Jewish Genealogical Society of New York will present “Cemetery Research in the New York Area Using the JGSNY’s Burial Societies Database” on Sunday, August 30 at 1 p.m. The Burial Societies Project, begun in 1989 aimed to identify the names and locations of all Jewish burial society plots in the New York area. Included were plots belonging to landsmanshaftn, or hometown associations, whose membership often conveyed the right to be buried in a society plot; synagogues; family circles; fraternal organizations; and labor unions. The Rochester Genealogical Society SIG will present “Genealogy in the Digital Age: Leveraging Free Tools to Work Smarter, Not Harder” on Tuesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. This program is designed for both novice and experienced genealogists who are looking to optimize their efforts without breaking the bank. The Western New York Genealogical Society volunteers will be offering in-person genealogical assistance at the Central Library in Buffalo on Friday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Aug. 19 noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to noon. The volunteers will be there to assist researchers with the society’s library collection and answer general research questions.
