Reclaim the Records, a not-for-profit activist group, has launched a website with more than 10.5 million records, indexing the basic genealogical data from New York State death records from 1880-2017.
This is the first time that any New York State death data from 1973-2017 has been available online. It’s also the first time that the 1957-1971 records for New York include the actual place of death, not just the ‘place of residence’ field.
The website includes advanced search features, so you can do not just name or date range but even geographic distance searches and age searches. The organization also built its first-ever basic natural language search system for searching using simple word searches such as “John Jones from Yonkers who died in the 1940s.”
