Several cemeteries across New York State will be offering tours in August. Here are some examples of what is on offer.
The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery in Troy will be featuring a Family Mausoleums of Oakwood tour on Saturday, August 16 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. Oakwood volunteers will lead you on a combination walking/driving tour to several opulent mausoleums at Oakwood. They will share the stores of the wealthy families that rest here and a glimpse inside some of these memorials.

Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo will have an African American Ancestral Trolley Tour on Saturday, August 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In partnership with the Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, this tour will feature stories of notable African Americans buried at the cemetery: political leaders, clergy, civil rights champions, business owners, soldiers, musicians, artists and more. Learn about the local, national and international impact of their contributions and achievements.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn will offer at Battle of Brooklyn Trolley Tour on Saturday, August 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman, for this annual trolley tour of Green-Wood’s Revolutionary War-related sites. On August 27, 1776, Green-Wood was a battlefield—and much of the largest battle of the war was fought across its grounds.

The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester will have a tour on the “Geology of Mount Hope Cemetery” on Saturday, August 30 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A University of Rochester geology professor will lead the tour, revealing how glaciers formed the dramatic landscape of Mount Hope.
The tour is free to members and $5 for non-members. There is no charge for children under 18 accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at the door.
