The Town of Islip will celebrate Juneteenth by holding a ceremony to honor Civil War Veterans on Thursday, June 19 at 4 pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Bay Shore.
The ceremony will rededicate the final resting places of African American soldiers, Private William Treadwell and Private Lewis Jackson, who were veterans of the 11th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery and Private William Carpenter, a member of the 31st U.S. Colored Infantry.
Also buried nearby is another Civil War veteran Charles Alfred Dearborn, a veteran of Company K, 27th Maine Infantry who died indigent and was to be buried in Potter’s Field when residents of the Town of Islip claimed his remains and had him buried at Oakwood Cemetery.
The ceremony will include full honors from the Society of the Grand Army of the Republic. The cemetery is located at 3 Moffitt Boulevard. For more details call 631-595-3826 or email historian@islipny.gov
