New York genealogy societies offer free June programs

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of June.

The Ontario County Genealogical Society will present “Using Libraries and Archives for Genealogical Research” on Wednesday, June 3 at 6 p.m. For more information, go to: https://www.ocgsny.net/home

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present a virtual program, “New York State and New York City Birth, Marriage and Death Records,” on Wednesday, June 3 at 6 p.m. This program provides an overview of New York’s civil vital records and demonstrates where to access available records. The differences between New York State and City records as well as the years of coverage will be discussed. CANCELLED  – The Orange County Genealogy Society will present “The Conklin Familes of the Hudson Valley” on Saturday, June 6 at 10: 30 a.m. at the Goshen Public Library. The Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society will meet on Monday, June 8 at 6 p.m. Members of the Sons/Daughters of the American Revolution (SAR/DAR) will share biographies of their patriot ancestors. There will be an update on Watertown’s Revolutionary War Memorial and a discussion on a field trip to the Oriskany Battlefield on August 6. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Publishing a Family History,” on Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m. This presentation will review the many ways to create, publish, and distribute a family history book in the digital age. The Genealogical Society of Rockland County will present “Rockland in the Revolution” on Tuesday, June 23 at 2 p.m. This is a hybrid program. Local History librarian Joe Barbieri will go over the important sources for looking at Rockland’s role in the Revolutionary War, including tracking down those who fought in the conflict. Capital District Genealogical Society will present “Using Tax Records to Dig Up Your Ancestors” on Saturday, June 27 at 1 p.m. This will be a hybrid meeting. The census taker showed up every ten years and often missed people. This presentation shows how tax records can fill census gaps, map the land and property of our ancestors, and uncover unexpected details such as house type, land location, neighbors, and sometimes even occupation.
