New York genealogy societies to offer January programs

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  January.

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have its genealogical library is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and 10. For more information, contact Donna Shine at librarian@bigswny.org

The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Genealogy Research in Lithuania” on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. his presentation highlights the challenges and solutions facing researchers when conducting genealogy research in Lithuania. Existing online records in Lithuania will be discussed including the new online database of Lithuanian gravesites. Also covered will be the German Census conducted in May 1942 of Lithuania as well as Facebook groups that can help you with your research. The Buffalo Genealogical Society of the African Diaspora will meet at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m.

The Genealogical Society of Rockland County will present “Developing Your Jewish Family History” on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. Take a look at the key essentials for beginning your genealogy journey; resources and tips specific to conducting Jewish family history research; and how you can preserve your own New York family stories. The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “Divorce in the United States” on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 6:45 p.m. Divorce is not just a 20th Century phenomenon. At first, granted by the State Legislature and then by the Courts, these are public records. Capital District Genealogical Society will present “Adding Y DNA to Your Genealogy Toolbox” on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. This is Zoom only. Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present “Navigating Online Collections from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum” on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database makes millions of records about Holocaust survivors and victims available to researchers from their own homes. Using case studies from the Kiev Region and the Wołyn Voivodeship in Poland, this presentation will demonstrate how researchers can use these online collections to find information about their families in interwar Europe.
