The Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society, located in Watertown, will present a talk on Monday, June 9, about the National Archives – including busting six National Archives myths and highlighting the advantages of researching information with the National Archives. The meetings take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Watertown NY.
The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “How to Develop Critical Online Newspaper Research Skills,” on Tuesday, June 10 at 7 p.m. Online newspaper research can be a frustrating endeavor for several reasons. Topics covered in this webinar include: why search old newspapers?; the challenges in searching old newspapers online; and seven critical skills and techniques to successfully search newspapers online. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present a hybrid program, “America’s First Norwegian Immigrants” on Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m. On October 9, 1825, The Restauration, a slooper from Norway, arrived on the shores of New York with passengers looking for religious freedom and opportunity. This presentation will look at the event of their New York landing, what “The Sloopers” were escaping from in Norway, and what became of the Norwegians in America centuries later, using genealogical tools to trace their ancestors. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Casimer Mazurek and the Great Steel Strike of 1919” on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be moved to Eugene V. Debs Hall, located at 483 Peckham Street on Buffalo’s East Side. Learn about the events surrounding the Great Steel Strike of 1919, a national strike of some 350,000 steelworkers. Hear the story of Casimer Mazurek, a 26-year-old decorated World War veteran, born in Poland but having fought for his new country, only to return to be shot to death by his own employer while on the picket line in the opening days of the strike.
