The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present a Polish Genealogy and Polonia Fair on Sunday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and will feature a presentation on Buffalo Polonia. It will take place at the St. Stanislaus Social Center in Buffalo.
The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present a hybrid program, “Exploring Greek Ancestry,” on Tuesday, May 6 at noon. Learn the key essentials for beginning your genealogy search, focusing on resource and tips specific to Greek history research. The program is free but registration is required. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Using Online Map Resources and Cadastral Maps of Poland” on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. In this lecture, learn about historical cadasters (land surveys) in Poland with the emphasis on Galicia (Austrian Hungarian Empire). Learn about the role of land surveys in the tax system in Galicia, maps, sketches, operat (documents which accompanied maps), and more, including how to find and use these resources for your genealogy. The Capital District Genealogy Society will present “Squeezing All The Information Out of Your DNA Matches” on Saturday, May 17 at 1 p.m. During the presentation questions can be submitted using the chat feature on Zoom. The speaker will address submitted questions at the end of the presentation. The Western New York Genealogical Society will present “Lure Your Ancestors Out of the National Register of Historic Places” on Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. This will be a Zoom presentation. The National Parks Service’s National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is our country’s catalog of places of significance to our past. New York has over 6,000 listed sites. The Genealogy Society of Rockland County will present “Finding Relations When No Family Stories Exist” on Tuesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. Genealogist and librarian Debra Dudek will discuss unmarried immigrant women living outside the family unit and the challenges of piecing together their ancestry. This presentation examines a combination of family stories, photographs and both direct and indirect evidence to rebuild the journey of an immigrant Czech family in Ohio and Nebraska. The Niagara County Genealogical Society will present “Think You the Census? There’s More…” on Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Federal censuses are basic to family history research, but many other censuses can help us find our ancestors. We need to use all the information in censuses to our best advantage. Learn how to turn those “tick-mark” censuses (1790-1840) into useful information and at census substitutes that can locate our ancestors in time and place between the censuses.
