Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket (Suffolk County) has completed Phase 1 of the digitization of the Three Village Herald, making the years 1954-1982 freely searchable on the New York State Historic Newspapers website.
The issues were stored on 35mm microfilm. The Northern New York Library Network digitized the reels and sent the images for optical character recognition, enabling full-text search across thousands of pages. The effort was partially funded by a $4000 digitization grant from the Long Island Library Resources Council.
Phase 2 is up next: converting the library’s extensive Herald microfiche, beginning with 1983. The library plans to proceed in stages as funding allows, applying again for digitization grants this summer to determine how many years can be added in the next batch.
