New York genealogy societies to offer free programs in March

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  March.

The Orange County Genealogical Society will present “A Resolute Woman: A Look at the Life of Lucy Knox” on Saturday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the 1841 Court House in Goshen. The Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society will present “Everything’s Relative” on Monday, March 9 at 6 p.m. at the LDS Chapel in Watertown. Several individuals will be sharing an ancestral story from their own genealogy research. Each will also tell how they learned of the story, whether through a family member, a newspaper article or through other research.

Rochester Genealogical Society will present “Who is That Mystery DNA Match?” on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. With close to 20 years of experience, the presenter has developed unique methods that blend DNA analysis, traditional genealogy, and descendant tracing to uncover even the most elusive family connections. The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “Polish Census Records,” on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. This webinar will cover census records in the three partitions of Poland and some after WWII as well. The Westchester County Genealogical Society will present “Navigating the Mayflower Families Silver Books: A Guide for Genealogists” on Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants publishes a series of 44 books called the Mayflower Families Silver Books, a compilation of colonial scholarship. This presentation covers the history of the Silver Books project and provides you with the tools and knowledge to effectively use them in your genealogy work, particularly for researching the colonial period. The Buffalo Genealogical Society of the African Diaspora will meet at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m.

Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present “Temple Emanu-El at 180: The Exhibition” on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Warren Klein, curator of the Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum of Judaica at Temple Emanu-El, will discuss the exhibition Emanu-El at 180. The Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum traces the evolution of the Temple in an exhibition of paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and ephemera drawn from its own holdings, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Historical, and private collections. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present a virtual program, “New York birth, marriage and death records,” on Monday, March 16 at 7 p.m. This program provides an overview of New York’s civil vital records and demonstrates where to access available records. The differences between New York State and City records as well as the years of coverage will be discussed. The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society will present an in-person program,  “Investigating Jewish Genealogy in Brooklyn” on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for Brooklyn History. The program will discuss the basics of starting your family history research, with a focus on Eastern European Jewish lineages. Program registrants will also learn the fundamental building blocks for conducting Brooklyn family history research with CBH’s unique resources.
