Jefferson County Genealogy Society announces 2026 programs

The Jefferson County New York Genealogical Society has recently announced its program schedule for 2026.

Unless otherwise noted, lectures take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building on Ives Street, Watertown.

Monday, March 9, at 6 p.m. – Everything’s Relative – Several individuals will share an interesting ancestral story from their genealogy research. Each will also tell how they learned of the story, whether through a family relative, a newspaper article, or through other research.

Monday, April 13, at 6 p.m. – Historic Newspapers – Newspapers are an invaluable source of information for genealogy and family history.  JCNYGS President Tom LaClair will share how he has used GenealogyBank to harvest hundreds of genealogy-rich articles from the Watertown Daily Times.

Monday, May 11, at 6 p.m.  – Artificial Intelligence and Genealogy –  AI speeds up and enhances family history research by automating tasks like transcribing handwritten documents, translating records, finding record matches, and acting as a powerful assistant for uncovering patterns and connections across vast historical data.

Monday, June 8, at 6 p.m. – Members of the Sons/Daughters of the American Revolution (SAR/DAR) will share biographies of their patriot ancestors.

Monday, July 13, at 5 p.m. – Summer picnic

Monday, August 10, at 6 p.m.  – New York State Historic Newspapers website

Monday, September 14, at 6 p.m. – Digitize New York – Connie Barone, the Town of Hounsfield and Village of Sackets Harbor historian, hosts a presentation on “Digitize New York” via Zoom. The New York Genealogical & Biographical Society launched “Digitize New York” in 2023 to educate communities across New York State in the preservation of at-risk historical documents.

Monday, October 12, at 6 p.m.  – GraveGeeks  – This is a volunteer-based organization whose mission is to preserve historic cemeteries and promote responsible cemetery conservation.

Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m.  – The Photo Detective –  JCNYGS President Tom LaClair will show you how to study the clues in your old family photos to help put names to faces and recapture their lost stories.

Sunday, December 13 at 12 p.m.  – annual Christmas and Holiday party
