New York public libraries to offer October genealogy programs

Many New York public libraries will be offering free genealogy programs in the second half of October.

Week of  October 19-25

Faiport Public Library (Monroe County) will present “Anatomy of a U.S. Military Pension File” on Monday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. This class will discuss the type of information you may learn from military pension files (Revolutionary War through the Civil War) and how to access them. The Middle Country Library (Suffolk County) will present “The Work of Reclaim the Records” on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. This is a virtual program. Learn about the work that Reclaim the Records is doing to make family history records more accessible to all researchers. The Port Jefferson Free Library (Suffolk County) will present “Graveyard Genealogy” on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Unearth family history through clues found in cemeteries and death records. Yonkers Public Library will offer “Create Your Family Tree” on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. Get together to talk about your genealogical research. Onondaga County Public Libraries will present “Using Land Records to Ground Your Family History” on Friday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. Learn how land deeds, property surveys, and historic maps can uncover your ancestors’ lives, migrations, and community ties.
