New York genealogy societies offer free October programs

Several New York genealogy societies will present programs during the month of  October.

The Ontario County Genealogy Society will present “RGS Writers’ Group Publishing Project” on Wednesday,  Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Ontario County Historical Society Museum, 55 North Main Street, Canandaigua. For more information, go to: https://www.ocgsny.net/home

The Buffalo Irish Genealogical Society will have its genealogical library is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 and 18. For more information, contact Donna Shine at librarian@bigswny.org

The Polish Genealogical Society of New York State will present “The Four Seasons in Culture for Poland” on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Each season had its own assigned tasks, work, and holidays, involving the whole family or even a village. Learn about how the ritual year looked in the villages of Poland in the past, what kind of religious and agrarian holidays were celebrated, as well as how the cycle of agricultural and farm work went.  For more information, go to: https://pgsnys.online/meetings/

The Buffalo Genealogical Society of the African Diaspora will meet at the Central Library of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m.

Westchester County Genealogical Society will present “Using Autosomal DNA for 18th and 19th Century Mysteries” on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. Learn how to use autosomal DNA to attack and potentially solve genealogical mysteries and brick walls for ancestors who were born or lived in the 1800s, 1700s and beyond. The Jefferson County NY Genealogical Society, located in  Watertown, will hold a presentation on funeral arrangements on Monday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. What happens once a family member dies? What paperwork is filled out? How do you obtain funeral-related paperwork for genealogy purposes? A local funeral director will provide information about the current processes once a person dies. The Rochester Genealogical Society will present “Photo Organizing and Preservation” on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Participants will learn the best ways to organize and preserve family photos including outsourcing as well as the DIY approach. Starting with quick and easy inventory and organizing tips, the talk will also cover creating a strategic plan to finally get this photo project done. Western New York Genealogical Society will present “No OMP, No Problem,” on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. Researching 20th century veterans is especially difficult as a fire destroyed millions of Official Military Personnel Files in 1973. Jewish Genealogy Society of New York will present “NKVD Files: On the Margins of the Holocaust” on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. This talk delves into the Jewish experiences in the region of former eastern Galicia, based on the files of the Soviet security apparatus (NKVD). The largest Jewish group arrested by the NKVD were Polish Jews – both prewar residents and refugees fleeing from German-occupied Poland. Others included former Jewish citizens of Austria and Czechoslovakia and a smaller number of Jews from Germany, Hungary, and Romania. With the initial batch of NKVD files made searchable on the Gesher Galicia database, this presentation will showcase the genealogical data that awaits family historians.  To register, go to: https://jgsny.org/

The Capital District Genealogy Society will present “French-Canadian Ancestry” on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.  It will be a hybrid meeting at the Clifton Park Half Moon Public Library. Struggling to trace your French-Canadian ancestors?  Learn how to track ancestors with or without a known Quebec origin, decode name variations, and navigate French records using technology. Explore the history of French-Canadian immigration, the concept of survivance, and Quebec’s genealogical resources. Non-members can register on the 16th of the month for that month’s meeting. Niagara County Genealogical Society will present “A Quick and Dirty Guide for Reading Old Handwriting and Script” on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. This presentation provides many tried-and-true tips and techniques for improving your skills at making sense of what was written decades or even centuries ago. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society will present “Italian Genealogy” on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. This is a hybrid presentation. Curious about Italian family history and heritage? With more and more records available online, this talk provides a strong overview for the beginner researcher while also including some lesser-known resources that will be of interest to advanced researchers.  Registration is required.
