Several cemetery tours will take place across New York State in September. There will be another blog post for cemetery tours in October.
The Cobleskill Historical Society (Schohaire County) and Cobleskill town historian will lead a free tour of the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. The tour will begin at the gazebo at the cemetery entrance on Quarry Street.
The tour will stop at several gravesites to recognize both well-known and little-known historic figures buried there. Some of the graves that will be visited include: Sarah Rogers, a former slave who may have been the last freed woman in New York; the Howe Family whose patriarch discovered and opened the cave that still bears his name and Joseph H. Ramsey, president of the Albany & Susquehanna Railroad which brought rail service to the Schohaire Valley in 1865.
The Westfield Cemetery Tour Through History (Chautauqua County) will take place on Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20.
Come see local actors bring resident of Westfield “back to life.” Horse drawn carriage tours or walking tours are available. Horse drawn carriage tours are $25 per person and will take place at 6 pm, 7 pm , 8 pm and 9 pm on Friday and at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm on Saturday. Walking tours are $15 per adult and $5 for children under 18. Walking tours will be at 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm both nights.

**There will be a walking tour of Woodlawn Cemetery in Canadaigua on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 2-4 p.m. The tour will feature 13 grave sites of prominent residents who were key to establishing Woodlawn Cemetery in 1884.
One of those sites is that of a man wounded twice at the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, a former village of Canandaigua mayor and treasurer in the 1880s, Oscar Crane. The cost is $20 in advance and $25 the day of the tour. Tickets may be purchased at the cemetery office at 130 N. Pearl Street.
The Horseheads Historical Society (Chemung County) will present “The History, Mystery and Lore Ghost Walk” on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28 from 3-8:30 p.m. each day. The tour will feature Maple Grove Cemetery. Participants will meet a series of actors dressed as notable people from the Town of Horseheads telling true stories about their past.

The Onondaga Historical Association will offer a Historic Ghostwalk – Ladies, Historically Speaking – on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28. Take a stroll through the Sedgwick Farm neigborhood in Syracuse while costumed performers will bring to life the voices of women from Syracuse’s past sharing their personal stories, struggles and secrets.
