Week of August 3 – 9
The Chemung County Library District will present “DNA Basic” on Tuesday, August 5 at 6 p.m. In this program professional genealogist Dave Robison will explain the different types of DNA tests and the specific purpose for each one. We’ll try to answer the question: “Which test should I take and from whom?” It all depends on your motivation whether it’s “cousin searching,” “more complete family genealogy,” “health concerns,” and others. Rogers Memorial Library (Suffolk County) will offer one-on-one genealogy appointments on Wednesday, August 6 from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. Call the reference desk at 631-283-0774 ext. 505 with any questions.
Clifton Park – Halfmoon Public Library (Saratoga County) will a Genealogy Drop-In on Thursday, August 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop in with questions from 11 am-12 pm, stay for the round table discussion starting at noon.
Volunteers from the Western New York Genealogical Society will be at the Buffalo Public Central Library on Wednesday, August 6 from noon to 4 p.m. They will provide assistance with the Western New York Genealogy Society’s Zintz Library Collection and answer other general research questions.
Lockport Public Library (Niagara County) will present “Free NYS Online Resources” on Thursday, August 7 at 6:30 p.m. Learn about navigating and exploring different free sites including the New York State Archives, New York Heritage, New York State Historic newspapers and the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society. No registration required.
South Huntington Public Library (Suffolk County) will offer an in person Genealogy Drop-In on Thursday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. Thinking about tracing your roots but don’t know where to start? Or maybe your search is under way and you’ve hit a dead end. Retired librarian PJ will be on hand to show you how you can access free genealogical resources, including Ancestry, through the library and to offer search tips and advice. No registration necessary.

The North Shore Genealogy Collective (Nassau County) will present “Special Censuses” on Tuesday, August 12 at 7 p.m. Learn about lesser-known census and enumeration records in this lecture. Middle Country Public Library (Suffolk County) in Selden will present a Drop-In Genealogy program on Wednesday, August 13 at 10 a.m. Did you know that the library has subscriptions to some of the most popular genealogy databases including Ancestry, Family Search and Find My Past? Drop in to work on your family history and get guidance from librarians. Computers will be provided, but patrons are welcome to bring their own laptops/tablets and connect to our wifi network.
The Monroe Free Library will have a Walk-In Genealogy session on Friday, August 15 at 10 a.m. Come to the Information desk and ask for Mike. He will spend some time with you to try and help answer your Genealogy questions. Sign up not needed but it is recommended that you call first so we can be best prepared to help you.
