From now through June 8, Geneanet.org is organizing a special week dedicated to the transcription of the New York City Geographical Birth Index.
The New York City Geographical Birth Index is a finding aid created by city archivists of every address in New York City from 1880-1912, with the name and certificate number of whoever was born there. If you have a family’s address – from a census, city directory, or existing birth, marriage, or death certificate – you may find a child’s birth certificate through this index.
No transcribed index of the collection existed until Geneanet volunteers began this project two years ago. There are an estimated 2.8 million births in this card index and today, over 120,000 cards have been transcribed by volunteers.
If you are intereted in working on this project, go to: https://en.geneanet.org/indexation/ and select Advanced level and under collection click NYC Geographical Birth Index.
