New York public libraries to offer September genealogy programs

Many public libraries throughout New York will be offering free genealogy programs during the beginning September. Here is a listing of some of the programs being offered.  Another post to follow will list programs in the latter part of September.

September 4 – 9, 2023

The Walworth Seeley Public Library (Wayne County) provides genealogy assistance every Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. For more information, go to: https://www.walworthlibrary.org/genealogy-local-history

Chatham Public Library (Columbia County) “Chatham Roots” club meets the first Thursday of the month from 2-3 p.m. to assist in the search for your family. For beginners, experts and everyone in between. We will work on those elusive ancestors, break down your brick walls, share tips and tricks and just have fun. Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library (Saratoga County) offers genealogy assistance the first Thursday of the month at 11 a.m. A genealogy researcher will help you with your questions, roadblocks, and other stumpers.

The Prendergast Public Library (Chautauqua County) provides genealogy assistance every Friday from 2-4 p.m. For more information, call (716) 484-7135 x226 .

September 10 – 16, 2023

Chili Public Library (Monroe County) will offer Ancestry.com training on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.  Learn the basics of building your family tree in just an hour.  To register, go to: https://calendar.libraryweb.org/event/11078803?hs=a

The Guilderland Public Library (Albany County) offers one-on-one genealogy consultations on the second Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This is a drop-in session; no need to make an appointment.

The Interlaken Public Library will offer a virtual Genealogy Meetup on the second Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m. You must register to receive the link for the Zoom program. To register, go to: https://interlakenpubliclibrary.org/event/genealogy-meetup/

The Penn Yann Public Library (Yates County) hosts a Family Research Support Group the second Wednesday every other month at 4 p.m. Learn from others and share your own tips and stories from your genealogical journeys in this ongoing, participant-driven program.  Take a look at one of our longtime member’s genealogy project, a family history book she researched and created.

The Palmyra Community Library (Wayney County) will offer genealogy assistance on Tuesday. Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.  You must bring your own laptop and register for a time slot. To register, go to: https://owwl.libcal.com/event/11174602

The Port Jefferson Free Library (Suffolk County) will present “Don I Have a Pilgrim Ancestor?” on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. This is a Zoom presentation. Discover what steps to take to find out if you are one of the 35 million living Mayflower descendants. This program will explore collections on different websites including AnericanAncestors, FamilySearch and Ancestry.com. Learn about what the membership requirements are to join the Mayflower Society. The Elwood Public Library (Suffolk County) will offer an in-person Basic Beginner Genealogy class on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.  Registration begins on Sept. 5. To register, go to: https://search.livebrary.com/record=g1114366&searchscope=16&SORT2=R

The Monroe Free Library will host a Genealogy Walk-In program on Friday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. Come to the Information desk and ask for Mike. He will spend some time with you to try and help answer your genealogy questions. Sign up not needed but we recommend you call first so staff can be best prepared to help you.  If you have any questions, email reference@monrefreelibrary.org.

The Geneva Public Library (Ontario County) will have Genealogy Research Roundtable on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. Other attendees and a library staff member can help you find what you are looking for. Just starting out? Attendees will be glad to show you tools you need to being your journey.
