Woman volunteers time to clean northern New York headstones

A recent website article from Channel 7 News in Watertown, focused on a volunteer who is cleaning stones at Denmark’s (Lewis County) Hillside Cemetery.

Allyson Stephenson, who calls herself the Crazy Cemetery Lady,  has been spending the last three summers cleaning cemeteries. She has previously done work at the Felts Mills and Old Theresa cemeteries.  She started during the pandemic, as something fun and productive to do.

She decided to post her cleanings on TikTok, telling the stories of those buried and educating viewers on how to clean their local graves, too. Stephenson does this all at her own expense even though she is not related to those buried in these cemeteries.

She is willing to teach others how to clean headstones and is also looking for others to volunteer to work with her.

You can email Stephenson at crazycemeterylady@gmail.com. You can also contact her through the Tug Hill Cemetery Hunters Facebook page.
